Johanna's passion for shoes began in childhood, inspired by her mother's dedication to well-fitted, sensible footwear. Yet, Johanna longed for something more glamorous.
Early gifts like glass-beaded slippers from Singapore and fur-beaded moccasins from North America only fuelled her obsession.
Despite a brief detour into a mundane arts degree, Johanna's true calling was in shoes. Disappointed with the available options, she decided to craft her own.
She met sculptor Petr Zly, who shared her passion. Together, they founded Preston Zly, blending Johanna's keen eye for design with Petr's sculptural expertise.
Preston Zly's designs have graced the pages of Australian Vogue, Elle, and Marie Claire, and have been showcased at Paris Fashion Week.
Johanna studied intensively under a master shoemaker, mastering techniques like the Goodyear Welt. Petr, captivated by the sculptural aspect of shoe design, developed unique toe, heel, and platform shapes, including innovative 3D-printed heels.
Their collaborations with Australian designers and features in international design magazines speak to their impact on the fashion world, leading to their selection to create a collection of shoes for the National Gallery of Victoria’s permanent collection to sit aside the blockbuster exhibition – Alexander McQueen: Mind,Mythos, Muse.
